What kind of canoe do I need for river with rapids?

I'm going on a trip this year and am needing a canoe to use on the White River. I hear that there are some pretty good rapids on this river so I'm needing a canoe that can withstand this type of stress. Can anyone suggest what kind of canoe I should buy, length and cost of this particular type of canoe ? I have roughly $400 to spend total. I would also be interested in how to obtain a canoe for this price. I have friends that tell me to try canoe rentals for their used and out of service canoes. Is this a good idea ? Thanks a bunch.

3. you need a pretty strong one.
4. great fun, but i never saw a canoe on our rapids outside chattanooga. they use kayaks, inflatable ones are recommended. have fun :)
