How do I organize a vacation to Deep Cove in BC?
I am from Michigan and my mom and I are planning a trip to Deep Cove in Vancouver, BC. Since we are from the states, it is hard to know how to plan this vacation. I am looking for some insight as how to go about this and I have a few other questions. When is the best time to go? (season) We want to stay at a bed and breakfast. Any recommendations? I sail and my mom kayaks. Are there any places there to rent sailboats and kayaks or canoes? Do Deep Cove shops and restaurants accept US currency? We would fly into Vancouver, but are there car services or buses to get us to Deep Cove? What else should I know? Thanks! I hope to hear from you all soon :]

- Best time is summer or early autumn, and there are lots of B&Bs in and around Deep Cove. You can rent kayaks in Deep Cove - not so sure about sail boats . I believe you have to belong to the sailing club to use their boats. No, Deep Cove shops and restaurants don't accept US currency. You are in a foreign country so you have to use the local currency - that is, Canadian dollars, just as Canadian tourists in the US have to use US dollars. But you can change your money at any bank. You can fly into Vancouver and there is bus service to get to Deep Cove. If you google up Deep Cove Chamber of Commerce, you can get a line on some B&Bs and other information. Have a wonderful holiday!
- Go in summer, July or August if you want to be pretty sure it will be dry and sunny. Deep Cove can be very rainy in winter, much wetter than Vancouver itself and when it rains the clouds can come almost right down to the water, making it very dark and dreary. Interesting to look at, but not so much fun to be boating in. June and September can be lovely but can also be very wet. My choice would be early July since the days are longer and you can be outside longer. The sun sets early in the Cove because it doesn't face west. There are hardly any mosquitoes on the BC coast which makes summer evenings more enjoyable than they can be in the east. You'll need Canadian money, but if you can't get any before you leave the US, there are currency exchanges in Vancouver Airport on the international departures level. They aren't open all the time though so if you arrive very late they may not be open. However, your ATM card should work in Canada so that's another way to get $CAN. The shops will probably accept US currency but you'll get a very poor exchange rate. Don't know any B&Bs personally but I would just search B&B Deep Cove BC and I'm sure they're all lovely in that area. Be sure to get one within walking distance of the Cove if you won't have a car and will be renting a kayak. Bus transportation locally isn't fabulous, only covers the main roads, and taxis can be a bit thin on the ground since they are based 20 minutes away though of course they are available. I found one called Cove View Accommodations which is about a 5 minute walk from the centre of the Cove, the kayak rental place and all the shops. Best, or simplest, bet for getting there is probably to take a taxi right from the airport, but you can take the Canada Line train into downtown and get a taxi from there, or transfer to the Seabus across the harbour, then take a bus to the Cove. If there's 2 of you and luggage, I'd go for the taxi. Yes, you can rent a kayak. Deepcovekayak.com. Sailboats, probably not. There is the Deep Cove Yacht Club, might be worth contacting them, they may know about that or know who will charter a boat. But while it's certainly possible to sail around Deep Cove and in Indian Arm, you better have an engine or be prepared to paddle a lot. Indian Arm is very enclosed and the winds can be tricky or absent altogether(or absolutely howling in some conditions, usually in winter), especially in summer, and there is some tide to contend with. Deep Cove is a lovely area, in summer it's very much a relaxed little beach town kind of place, even though there's no beach to speak of. Indian Arm is a great place to be on the water. Oh, and when you're doing any internet research, make sure you're finding the right Deep Cove. There's also one on Vancouver Island, near Sidney. Take rain gear, summer or not. I was there once on a summer day, waiting (without rain gear) while my friend retrieved some boat gear we had forgotten at home, when a little cloud floated in, poured rain for 20 minutes, then disappeared. My friend was a bit puzzled to find me looking like a drowned rat on what was once again a warm sunny summer day.
