Grand Rapids, MI over 131 and 96 why are there so many birds flying overhead?

There are hundreds of birds that fly together in crazy patterns, all times of the day and night. They stay right over where 131 and 96 cross in downtown Grand Rapids. Anyone know why? I have googled this without finding anything.

  1. A lot of the answer would depend on the kind of bird, though I suspect you are seeing starling flocks- they begin massing into very large flocks at dusk as they assemble near roosts. Before they settle, they will fly in fantastic formations, veering back and forth and swerving in unison without colliding. In the morning they break up into smaller flocks as they leave to find food (smaller can still be in the hundreds).
