What to do if bad weather strikes while canoeing?
We going canoeing on the Au Sable River in Michigan every summer. Every year I try to check the forecast and monitor the weather radar prior to our outing, however, everyone knows that bad weather can come out of no where in the summer in the Midwest. Therefore, I would like some knowledgeable advice on what to do if bad weather strikes while on the river. Obviously I would get out of the water/my metal canoe if it's lightning, however, there's no where else to go except a forest full of trees. What are my options at this point?

- Carry a tarp and some rope w/ you, it can be used to make a shelter to stay dry. You might also want to carry dry clothes these can be kept dry n a garbage bag, squeeze all the air out of it, and tie the top closed to make it waterproof.
- When bad weather strikes or hopefully you will see it coming head to the closest shoreline. Make sure than when you go canoeing you bring a survival kit as well as a tarp and strong string, knife and get you boat right out of the water. Do not use the boat for shelter as it is metal. Put up a makeshift shelter and cut branches for soft bedding. Basically wait out the storm regardless of how long it is and everytime you go canoeing make sure that you have told someone exactly where you were going in case they have to look for you.
- Get out of the water. Head into the forest. Stay away from the tallest trees.
