what is the name and where can i find info on hydraulic pressure created by running a pipe down a river?

used in early hydraulic mining as seen in movie Pale Rider, the pipe runs downstream in decreasing size to build pressure. I am looking for sources of info ,and possible equations on pressure increase,or variables Thanks Gaylen

  1. *Penstoke. -A penstock is a sluice or gate or intake structure that controls water flow, or an enclosed pipe that delivers water to hydraulic turbines and sewerage systems. It is a term that has been inherited from the technology of wooden watermills. Principle is same in hydrolic mining. -Run of the river hydro projects can involve small dams, but they are done in a way that doesn’t flood massive amounts of land or interfere greatly with marine life. Other hydro turbines operate without dams. Some projects involve running a pipe down the stream. This pipe becomes a Penstock that creates a head pressure, which allows a hydro turbine to run efficiently.
