What are the best canoeing rivers in michigan? We just did the grayling to lake huron run last weekend. There were too many reservuoirs in the last part of the trip. We are looking for something faster, maybe some light rapids. I am in Bay City, so we need to be about 2 hours away from there. So we can be in the water before dark.
Good place to try out canoeing in Michigan? So I'm curious to try canoeing. I can't swim which is an issue, but I'd have a life jacket and I'm not too afraid of water. Anyways...that aside, how should I go about this? I dont really have many friends into it, but I'd love to learn. It seems like it would be fun/kinda peaceful.
What type of lures are used on the ausable river in Michigan? We are canoeing the Ausable River in Michigan next weekend. We will be going from Mio to Lake Huron. We are not experianced fishers, but would like to have a trout dinner one of those nights. We do not have room for any fly fishing rods. We will just be taking our small travel rods. Also, any advice for doing that run? Anything that we should bring, that you don't usually need, for that run?
Where is a fun Michigan cabin or campground for a weekend vacation? I am from southwest Michigan, and am looking for a private cabin, campground cabin, etc. within a few hours of home (mid-Michigan, mid-western Michigan, northern Michigan) for a long weekend. The site must allow dogs, and preferably is fairly secluded with hiking, canoeing, or kayaking available nearby. Any suggestions? Thanks!
Where can we go camping in lower michigan? We want something very rustic, Would love to have our tent right off of a lake [look outside the tent and see water.] Somewhere with trails and be able to rent boats/canoes etc. Also something scenic. Would prefer in lower michigan but don't mind traveling to the u.p if we find a place we really want to go to. Thank you so much for your help; all answers appreciated. You're awesome :] Somewhere not overcrowded/ space between campsites.
Where is a good camping or adventure spot in Michigan? I'm a student living in Michigan so I'm looking for something on the cheaper side. Activities like hiking, bungee jumping, canoeing, fishing.. any of those fun nature-type adventures. I would greatly appreciate recommendations, all the tourism websites make everything sound great to get business :)
Where are some great campgrounds in Southern Michigan? My friends and I just finished our first year of college and I want to get everyone together and go camping some where in Southern Michigan not far from Ohio for a long weekend sometime this summer. I am looking for a place with a pond or lake or some kind of water to swim in and possibly even canoe some place close by. It would be great if it was more secluded so we wouldn't be disturbing anyone if we are loud but that is not a necessity. Thanks for your help!
Dispersed camping in Michigan? This May I want to go dispersed camping in Michigan along with canoeing and a little bit of hiking. Does anyone know where would be a good place for this? And also are you allowed to bring alcohol with you while you camp?
What are some good campsites in Michigan? Lower mi please... Also, would be nice if it was by a lake or river... so you could go canoeing, tubing or boating? Please and thank you! Also would be nice if it was close to grand rapids...

Whats the best campground in Muskegon MI? Im planning a camping trip to muskeon with my 4 kids and am looking for the best place to camp. We plan on going to Michigan Adventure, and also want to go tubing and canoeing. Whats the best campground close to the park and Lake Michigan?
Best City In Michigan for a Small Starter Family? Room for personal growth (career, school, hobbies)? Hi, I'm from the Upper Peninsula of Michigan and I've come down state with my hubby in pursuit of better jobs, but we haven't had much luck! Right now, it's just us and one little guy. We are interested in having the option of technical training or certification at the moment, I was going to pursue college for Liberal Arts and Sciences later on. The hobbies we like to engage in together are outdoors activities such as fishing, hiking, canoeing, and hunting. We have also shared a history of playing soccer. Personally, I enjoy water sports above all else. I have also taken on yoga and martial arts. I am also an occasional artist and foodie. A few things I love about our area at the moment I may not want to let go of are farmer's markets, kite skiing, yoga instructors, two near-by ok colleges, midwives, an arts council, a wonderful library that has great programs for kids and teens, and an arts academy for children up to the 8th grade. However, I would like to keep my options open!
What to do if bad weather strikes while canoeing? We going canoeing on the Au Sable River in Michigan every summer. Every year I try to check the forecast and monitor the weather radar prior to our outing, however, everyone knows that bad weather can come out of no where in the summer in the Midwest. Therefore, I would like some knowledgeable advice on what to do if bad weather strikes while on the river. Obviously I would get out of the water/my metal canoe if it's lightning, however, there's no where else to go except a forest full of trees. What are my options at this point?
Good camping southern Michigan? I'm looking for good place to camp somewhere between Detroit and Chicago, somewhere with hiking or canoeing would be best. Does anyone have any good places?
What is a good campground in Northern Michigan? I want to go camping (tent camping) in Northern Michigan this summer – July sometime – and I’m wondering where to go. I’ve never been tent camping before, but others that are in my group have. We want a place that is “party friendly” without too many young children or older adults - We are all mid to late 20’s and like to drink and have a good time. I would LOVE To be near traverse city or the sleeping bear dunes – but anywhere in Michigan that is somewhat close to water for swimming, fishing or tubing/canoeing. Thanks for the help!!
Have you ever gone camping in traverse city? I am planning a camping trip to the KOA campsite in buckley, michigan (near traverse city). I have never been here. Has anyone camped here? What is the campgrounds like? Is there a beach at the campsite? How far is it from the city? Is there a good river to canoe on?
What is a good place to go camping in Northern Wisconsin? I am looking into going on a fishing trip with 5 of my friends in Northern Wisconsin, near its boarder with the upper peninsula of Michigan. We want to find a campground where our tents would not be right next to the neighboring campsite. We don't have to be stranded in the wilderness, just a camp ground that isn't packed together. Also any information about renting canoes would be helpful!! Thank you so much!!
River Tubing & Camping in Michigan? I'm looking for a campground in Michigan that offers tubing down a river. We really want a place that will take you to the river and picks you up when you're finished. We just really don't want to drive to a canoe/tubing place and then have to drive back to the campground. Or if there are any tubing places that have a shuttle that pick you up at a campground in the area. Thanks!
Week long survival trip in Michigan? I plan on going on a trip with a couple friends this summer. We want to go with the least amount of supplies like fishing pole, knife, matches, and water. I have gone camping many times and know what I am doing for the most part. I took a survival class in high school and went on a 5 day canoe trip (last night without a tent). I have always wanted to do this by myself but want to do it with a couple friends first. Does any body know where I can do this in michigan? I was thinking the u.p.? yes I live north of detroit
Camping-Illinois/Michigan with friends. Where to go? I want to do some camping in a rustic, scenic atmosphere, preferably with a lake nearby. Just a tent and a car. For those who have been camping a lot, are there any particularly special places that you would recommend? Things I'm looking for: -Endless woods/forest to go hiking/wandering through(aka-breathtaking, adventure filled landscape) -Place to setup tent and have a bonfire -Water nearby either fishing/canoeing/swimming/etc.. These are just basic things. Open to suggestions if there is anything else you can recommend. Would like to AVOID the R.V. campground-type experience and places littered with young families. note: limited amount of funding.
Where's a good campground in Michigan? Some friends and I have decided to save money on our high school senior spring break by camping this year. We want something with a bathroom and shower but other than that as rustic as possible. There's gonna be 4 of us so somewhere we can be loud without dealing with other people. Our spring break will be April 25- May 1 and well go during the week so it will be cheap. If you know of any campgrounds like this please let me know. If you know of ones like this that have canoeing, disk golf, sand dune buggys, fishing, other outdoor activities around please let me know about those thing to. Thanks everyone!
What Michigan camping areas let you cut down trees and build campsites? We would like to go camping like the good ol days, no plug ins, no cabins, just us out in the woods. Fishing and camping in a primitive spot. We aren't afraid to hike, and we can bring a canoe. Any suggestions? Alright point taken, I guess I was wondering more about having a fire using downed/dead trees. I didn't mean to cut down healthy trees. I have been to state parks and all I've been to require a firepit or ring of some kind? Which isn't exactly practical if you plan on hiking to your spot. Thanks for the info
what are some cheap summer camps for 13-16 year olds? well i live in michigan i want to be affordable they dont have to be in michigan but somewhere close i really like wildlife i have alot of energy i am a girl but not girly type i really like camping in tents and cabins and i like swimming canoeing fishing diferent outdoor stuff i want to have it last about 1-2weeks i am usually really bored during the summer can you give me a website and maybe some background info about it
Does anyone canoe/kayak in the winter? I was just wondering if any one else canoes in the middle of winter. I live in the middle of Michigan and can't find any one to go with me. Everybody thinks I am nuts! Are there any winter canoe/kayak clubs I may be able to join?
What kind of bug bit me!!? Okay I just got back from a 4 day camping/canoeing/kayaking trip in northern Michigan. I slept in a tent on an air mattress with my cousin. It was possible for bugs to crawl in though. When we got home we both noticed 6 to 10 tiny bug bites on our hands and ankles. So I'm wondering what kind of bug it is. Please help!!! Thank you! Let me know if you need more info!
Legality of floating a raft? Me and my bud are planning on making a raft to float out to an island on the manistee river trail in michigan (its a public campsite). Is this legal? Or do i have to rent a canoe? itd be a wood raft
Canoe or Kayak, and why? Do you prefer to canoe, or kayak? What type of boat do you have? What type of water to you paddle in? How long have you been paddling? Are you a solo or tandem paddler? Why do you do one over the other? What is your favorite river/trip? I canoe, I have a Bell Prodigy and a Mad River Pearl(but I prefer the Prodigy)of my own, but we also have a Esquif Zephyr, a Curtis Solo Cruiser, a Nova Craft Bob Special, a Mad River Explorer, a Bell Wildfire, and a Bell Merlin, I have paddle just about every river worth paddling in Michigan (flat water and white water), and some white water in Tennessee (not a lot), I have been paddling my whole life (15 years), I am a solo paddler(for about 7 years), I used to kayak but I think canoeing is more of an art, and it takes a lot more practice to master. My favorite trip is the New Years Day trip on the Pine River(michigan), from Dobson to Lowbridge.
Questions about dry shampoo..? First of all, I am going on a trip this summer. It will be twelve day in Michigan, six of which will be actual canoeing. I know I won't be taking true showers during that time, but I still want my hair to be clean. Is there such thing as an environmentally-friendly dry shampoo? Also, are there any ways to keep my hair clean without a shampoo for that time (that is to take the grease out of it)? p.s. Add any other info u know about dry shampoos along with where to get them. Thanks!
Advice- How's my college essay? Please provide a Personal Statement regarding how your academic achievements, personal interests, and life experiences have helped prepare you to succeed academically and to be an active member of the UC community. Be sure your response addresses each of the three components. (Please limit your response to approximately 250 words). Throughout high school, I have had a lot going on outside of the classroom. Whether it is sports or clubs, I’m always busy. I received the Scholar Athlete Award this past soccer season for maintaining good grades while participating in sports. This is a significant achievement that shows how I can be active in the community and still have academics as my top priority. In high school, I have also pursued my interests in business. I have always had an interest in the business world. Last year, I participated in a Parliamentary Procedure team through an organization called Business Professionals of America. My success on the team helped me realize my potential in business as well as how to better utilize the resources around me. Experiences like these help to better prepare me for the future. One of these is when I went canoeing with my uncle up in northern Michigan this past summer. We pushed off the side and took off rowing up the river. We went up the river first, and it was difficult to row, to the point of getting spun around and thrown back the way we came. It felt as if we went miles up that river when we hadn’t gone even one. On our way back down the river, we began fishing. We both caught fish and we had a blast. Then I realized something that I will never forget. You must work in order to get to where you want to be in life, and once you are there, you will look back on what you accomplished and it will feel even better. -------------This is just what I threw together, I'd appreciate any advice- Thanks for your help

Things to do during summer 2009? So summer is approaching, and I need a little help. My boyfriend and I are trying to make a list of things that we can do or places that we can go this summer, and we're kind of running out of ideas. So far we have: -Go kayaking and canoeing -Swim (of course) -Go horseback riding -Learn how to ballroom dance -Take trips to Michigan Adventure and Cedar Point -Take a trip to the zoo If you could give us some more ideas of what we could do then that would be great! :) Best answer with the most ideas gets 10 points, of course. Thanks everybody! :)
Need to find an awesome vacation spot!! HELP!!? My fiancee and I want to plan a honeymoon trip. We don't like the usual "honeymoon" spots - islands, cruise ships... we want something fun. WE are getting married in October, but would like to wait at least a month (or more) before going on vacation. The things we like to do are: snowboarding, canoeing, going to spa, camping... we are pretty open to new things. We just want to go somewhere relaxing, and still have things to do. We HATE golf. We are young, both are 21, so non of the bed-n-breakfast places or anywhere aimed at older people. We live in Michigan, and can't afford too much - we would be willing to drive somewhere or fly. If any one has a sweet idea for an affordable vacation, let me know! Or, if you know a good website to find cool vacations send it my way. THANKS!!!
I need help for a title? I wrote a memoir and i need help for a title. this is just a rough draft I don't have a copy of the final for ya but it's good eough. but please skim and give me ideas. So far I have 'Summer of Friendship' “Molly!” Carolyn, Haley, and Ali raced towards me as I leaped of the Camp Echo bus. For the next two weeks we would all be together again. We hadn’t seen each other since the summer before. They fired questions at me and I eagerly answered them. It wasn’t until ten minuets passed that I noticed a boy standing a few feet from us a little awkwardly. He was shorter than me by a few inches and had blonde hair and blue eyes. “Hey,” I said a little embarrassed to the girls, “Who’s that?” The girls (except Carolyn) giggled. They went on to explain that he was Carolyn’s boyfriend. I raised my eyebrows at Carolyn. She laughed and opened her mouth to retort. Just then a counselor blew a whistle. We skipped over from the bus spots past our luggage the dining hall, the nurses cabin, the director cabin, and on to the tennis courts. I left my pink bag that was on the bus with me with my cousin Mitchell. “Watch this” I mouthed while I left him to talk with his friends. The counselor was welcoming us to Michigan explaining how they were grateful we made they long trip from Chicago where most of the campers lived. Except for a girl named Natalie, her brother (a counselor), two boys from France, a girl and her brother from Mexico, and me, everyone lived on the Northshore. (It’s in Chicago). After the long soeech they started reading of the list of girls names and the cabin they’d be sharing with 11 other girls. We eagerly listened for our names. “In Wally Ford: Carolyn Briggs, Ali Marks, Haley Moffat, Molly Fischl” The list went on saying eight other girls names but we were to busy screaming our heads of to notice. “Bye Conor,” said Carolyn smiling timidly to the blonde boy. “See ya guys” he said smiling back, “Oh and nice to meet ya,” he said to me, “Molly right?” “That’s me!” After our counselors in our cabin introduced themselves and we played a name game, the four of us had already forgotten which cabin we were in. “Wally Ford,” our counselors Becky, Claire, and Courtney exclaimed a little irritated since we had asked five minutes a go. Wally Ford was on the west side of camp. The boy’s side. Meaning we would be around boys all summer long. Somehow, we thought we would survive while other girls in our cabin eeked. They were troubled about having to change and take showers. Of course they were new to camp and didn’t understand that you showered in the girls bathroom, not the guys and we changed, slept, and lived, in our own cabin with tons of privacy. They told us to go get our luggage, choose our bunks and do a little unpacking before the swimming and horse riding tests. There were four levels for the swim test you could do. 1) Is red. You have to take swim lessons, can only swim in the red area (the shallowest end of the lake), and can’t water-ski, sail, ect. 2) is white. You have to take swim lessons, can only swim in the red area and white area (the middle part of the lake), and can only boating and canoeing. No sailing or waterskiing. 3) Is blue circle. You have to take swim lessons, you can swim in red, white, and blue area (the deepest part of the lake), you can sail, water-ski, everything. The last one is blue. You can do everything and you don’t need to take swim lessons. That’s what everyone aimed for. After choosing bunks, and taking the swim test (everyone in our cabin got blue or blue circle except for one girl who got red) we were taught camp rules and showed the newbies around the camp. I could already tell this would be a great summer. I couldn’t wait for the next day when it would be a standard day of camp. Wow, it went by fast. Two weeks later it was closing campfire. We bawled as we sang camp songs and told stories with the 300-kid camp. We were going to miss each other soo much. Carolyn had gotten homesick and left in the first week of camp. Right before; she and Conor had broken up. So for the rest of the day that Carolyn had left Ali, Haley, Conor, John (a boy who we had become inseparable with), and I were hugging and crying. Mostly me because I wouldn’t see her in a long time and they were her neighbors and in her classes. Seeing as she wasn’t going back to camp next summer I couldn’t help it but cry. As the campfire died out the counselors told us to say our goodbyes, we were leaving the next morning. The friendship I had found this summer would stick with me forever. Conor, a boy who I thought only cared about football, became my best friend. John, who I assumed only cared about himself, is someone I text daily. Ali, Haley and Carolyn were already my best friends but I had learned to love them even more. I hugged each one of them for a long time. Then I went over to hug Randy, Tim, Quinton, Emily, Paige, Hannah, Sammy, Phoebe and many more. This summer was no do I know it's not fluent but i really need title help so ignore that. omg it didn't fit the while story in. the rest is just goodbyes and stuff I keep on adding stuff sorry but how bout like memories that echo since the camps name is camp echo. summer of friendship doesn't seem to capture how i felt. ugh this is hard!!!
Drinking while on the lake? Is it illegal in the state of Michigan to drink while out on a lake in a non-motor driven vessel? Like a raft, kayak, or canoe.
Where can I canoe? Adventurers share your stories.? I am looking for an adventure somewhere in america, preferably close to my home state, Illinois, but I am not opposed to driving several hours to find one. I want to canoe or raft or kayak, I don't care, down a river or something and I want it to take more than one day. I would love to camp on the waterside and/ or hunt my own food. Does anyone have a water travel experience or idea to share with me? I just need a where and how, etc. I'm not even opposed to Lake Michigan as long as I have to spend more than just a few hours on the water.
Where in the MI area can I take a one week long unguided canoe or kayak trip? I'm an experienced wilderness camper & I'm planning my 1st river trip for Fall 2010. I have some solo canoe & kayak experience as well, & would like to spend a week paddling about 8 hours a day & camping the other 16. My main concern is finding a river in the Michigan or Ohio area that's safe enough to travel for that rough distance, and doesn't have many seriously shallow spots that will require me to get out & carry my vessel. Thanks in advance

How do I organize a vacation to Deep Cove in BC? I am from Michigan and my mom and I are planning a trip to Deep Cove in Vancouver, BC. Since we are from the states, it is hard to know how to plan this vacation. I am looking for some insight as how to go about this and I have a few other questions. When is the best time to go? (season) We want to stay at a bed and breakfast. Any recommendations? I sail and my mom kayaks. Are there any places there to rent sailboats and kayaks or canoes? Do Deep Cove shops and restaurants accept US currency? We would fly into Vancouver, but are there car services or buses to get us to Deep Cove? What else should I know? Thanks! I hope to hear from you all soon :]
around the campfire...? Some of my fondest memories are from time spent around the campfire. When I was a boy my father use to take me for trips into Ontario. We would travel by canoe deep into Canadian wilderness from lake to lake. We would go where there were no roads. The fishing was great and the campfires stories were even better. Simple foods cooked on the campfire tasted better than the finest cuisine found anywhere. Life just didn't get any better. We are from the da Michigan U.P. We took weekend camping/fishing trips throughout the U.P. on most summer weekends. Sometimes the whole family would come but most of the time it was just the two of us. The campfire time was the best bonding time possible. I never wanted these times to end. But they did. I wanted to keep my family close. Money was tight but camping/fishing cost very little. The campfire magic was there. Memories enough to last a lifetime. We still do it. I wonder if it will ever end. Any campfire magic stories out there?
questions about xc season? i got this email 2 days ago and here it is: Huskie Runners- I hope you are enjoying your summer break so far. My intent was to get this information out to you no later than last Friday however my wife went into labor last Thursday and our twin daughters were born on the next day. We have only been home since Monday night and it has been busy adjusting to being a family of four. In short I apologize for not getting this information out sooner. 1. Cross country conditioning (what we affectionately call Summer Running) officially starts Monday July 12th at 8 a.m. We will meet at West middle school's parking lot . XC conditioning is not mandatory but absolutely essential to be competitive by the fall and not get hurt in the process. Conditioning is scheduled Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to roughly 10 am. (sometimes we get done a bit sooner, occasionally a bit later.) More details on a week by week basis. 2. Cross country team camp will be a bit later this year. XC camp will be from August 26th to August 29th. This year we will be going to Portage Lake Covenant Bible Camp in Onekama Michigan. In their off season, they rent out their incredible facilities to teams and school groups at a reduced cost. This year we will be there with the Cross country teams from Olivet college and Saranac High School. The cost for Camp including our lodging, food, rope course, canoe trip, and fuel is only $150. We encourage all of our team members who have the appropriate mileage to join us for this incredible experience of training and team bonding. 3. I am happy to announce that Joe Hartley will be joining our coaching staff this season as an assistant coach. Joe is a former Northern XC and track runner who has much running experience and also helped coach our distance team for Track & field this past spring. Coach Heather Schilacci will also be joining us again as well as cameo appearance from Coach Dave (who has recently mapped out the trail mileage for our favorite paths at Al Sabo preserve) and other alumni runners. 4. Start running on your own Now!!!!! Do not wait until July 12 to get into shape. A. If you are brand new to running Cross country, start over the next 3 weeks by running 3-4 times per week for 20-30 minutes each time. If it feels to easy...then go about five minutes longer. B. If you are a veteran runner then you need to be running more mileage than. Shoot for running five times per week. (Two longer runs and 2 shorter runs with the shorter runs being 3 to 4 miles in length. C. If you are returning varsity runners then you need to be looking for weekly mileage around 30 miles for guys and 20 miles for girls per week. If you haven't run for a while you will have to drop that mileage down a bit for the first couple of weeks, but at least be running for durations of 20 to 30 minutes. We must build some endurance. i dont quite get it, like for the camp, what would appropriate mileage be cause i was running 3+ miles when i did track and i was like one of the best distance runners. seccond what would i be a veteran runner or beginner cause i was one of the best distance runners on the track team this season but since the season ended on 5-20, i have not ran since and now im in china and i ran for like 20 min yesterday but got cut short cause it was raining and it felt pretty hard. i mean i can usually run 3+ miles easily and the 20 min of running felt hard but i think it was aat a pretty fast pace. i also cant arrive at the summer training cause i am stuck in china till july 18 or 23 so i dont know how much they run and how hard they run and stuff. could you guys help with a schedule i could follow. i plan on running tomorrow morning. HELP!! thank you very much!!!
I can't remember the title or the author of this one book? and it's a shame because it is one of the books that have had the most impact on me. It took place in Michigan I think and it was about a guy who had a life that was going for him, his dad, who's an architect, gave him a Camaro but then one day this girl comes up to him and tells him to tell his dad to stop cheating. She contacts him again but this time with an email containing an explicit photo proving it. He finds out that she's the daughter of the woman his dad is cheating on her with who is also cheating on her husband. She's a kayaker, does Junior Olympics, is blond, and has a sister named Jenny who's on a rebellious spree. They both decide to tell their parents that they know. When the guy, Jed i think is his name, tells his dad, his dad tells the mom who ends up kicking him out and has a crazy vacuuming tendency. When the girl tells her mom, she tells her dad and they break a bunch of stuff in the house. The girl and the guy keep contact and help each other through this weird time. In the end, the daughter and the guy end up falling for each other but then a storm breaks out while they're out and a tree ends up crushing her body. A helicopter gets there but because of the weather conditions it ends up crashing with her body in it. Later, it shows the main character who's the guy, pretty much wasting his life away, playing a computer game that's similar to the Sims and gets visited by Jenny. Afterwards, the book ends with him visiting his dad who is now living in a different apartment and him getting a little bit of closure. There was also a picture of a kayak or a canoe on the front cover. This was a really nice book even though it wasn't too famous. I would just really appreciate it if anyone out there could recognize the storyline and give me the name of the title. Thanks!

Looking for a specific book published before 1999...? I'm looking for the name of a book I read a LONG time ago (more than a decade) in elementary school. I just have little tid bits I can remember about it so if anyone could put the pieces together and come up with a title I would greatly appreciate it! --Facts-- * Takes place in Michigan * Kids travel back in time (from modern days) to the days of Native Americans * A canoe is possibly on the cover or is their way of transport back in time * Involves the Sleeping Bear Sand Dunes as they discover them/play on them and fall asleep and travel back in time that way. That's all I can remember. I hope someone can help!
